Brown spots, sun damage, wrinkles, acne, aging skin. Those seem to be the most common answers. Retinol first hit the market in the 1970’s and was initially used to treat acne. Since the ‘70’s, Retinol has been used to treat psoriasis and warts, and is known to increase the skin’s thickness, and production of collagen. Retinol is an essential for reversing aging skin, sun damage, and fine lines as well as crepey looking skin.
How does Retinol work?
Retinoids prompt surface skin cells to cast off rapidly and allow new cells to emerge. Deeper lays of the dermis is encouraged to thicken, which increases the production of collagen making skin more elastic. Skin tone is evened with use of retinol, so brown spots attributed to aging and sun damage, lighten and eventually disappear with regular use.
Spot treatment of brown spots, create a halo effect. All over treatment with a “brightening” cleanser is best. When used in combination with a corrective type of moisturizer containing Vitamin C, and “boosters” such as a chemical exfoliant (glycolic of salicylic acid) the process is enhanced. Removing the outer layer of skin cells allows more effective penetration of these active ingredients.
How long does it take to notice a difference?
It varies. With over the counter products, it may take up to 6 months. If your dermatologist prescribes a retinoid for you, changes could be visible in 6 to 8 weeks.
